Rare earth magnets are strong permanent magnets made from rare earth elements. China makes most of them. Neodymium magnets are used in many appliances, vehicles, and jewelry. They are more valuable than rare earth metals. Rare earth magnets are also used in many military weapons.
Other magnet factories are in Japan and Germany, but they also get rare earths from China.
China controls most of the rare earth market. For every 50,000 tons of rare earth minerals outside of China, only about 8,600 tons are not related to China. There is currently no considerable separation capacity outside of China for the heavy rare earth element dysprosium used in the production of magnets.
