Rare earth functional ceramics include insulating materials (electrical and thermal), capacitor dielectric materials, ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials, semiconductor materials, superconducting materials, electro-optical ceramic materials, thermoelectric ceramic materials, chemical adsorption materials, solid electrolyte materials, etc.
Adding trace amounts of rare earth oxides to traditional piezoelectric ceramic materials can greatly improve the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of these materials, making them more adaptable to practical needs. Now PZT piezoelectric ceramics have been widely used in electroacoustics, hydroacoustics, ultrasonic devices, signal processing, infrared technology, ignition and detonation, micromotors, etc. Sensors made of piezoelectric ceramics have been successfully used in automotive airbag protection systems. BaTiO₃ capacitor dielectric materials doped with La or Nd can keep the dielectric constant stable, remain unaffected over a wide temperature range, and increase service life.
Rare earth-doped sensitive semiconductor materials can be used as over-current and overheating protection elements, temperature compensators, temperature sensors, delay elements, demagnetization elements, etc.
